of the road.
84. With the consent of the County Council the way across
Tooting Common, opposite Furzedown Drive, was
widened and made up by the Borough Council, and
re-opened for vehicular traffic. It will be
tained in future as a highway. Under the agreement with the
County Council the Borough Council has power, when it deems fit,
to provide a footpath on the Common on each side of the road.

85. For the purpose of widening the way across Tooting
Common between Church Lane and Rectory Lane, opposite Mantilla
Road, two small pieces of the Common were, with the County
Council's consent, added to the public way. The Borough Council
also proposed that Church Lane should be widened by throwing
into the public way two small pieces of Tooting Common at the
corners of Mantilla Road. The County Council did not see its way
to surrender the piece of the Common at the eastern corner, but
arrangements are being made for the piece at the western corner
to be added to the public way.
86. With one exception, the whole of the property required
for widening Mitcham Road in connection with the
construction of electric tramways along that
thoroughfare from Tooting Broadway to the County boundary at
Tooting Junction railway station, has been acquired, and the land
thrown into the public way paved. The piece of forecourt needed
to complete the improvement is only a few yards in extent, and,
having regard to the high price asked by the owners, the Borough
Council concurred in the proposal of the County Council that no
further steps should be taken at present for its acquisition. Some
of the surplus land purchased in connection with the widening
was sold to the London County Council for the purpose of a tramways
electricity sub-station, and steps are being taken with the
view of the disposal of the remainder. Two-thirds of the cost of
the improvement will be borne by the County Council.
