The total number of workshops on the Register was 1,804,
including 160 retail bakehouses, 149 workshop laundries, 313
dressmakers' and milliners' premises, and 1,182 other workshops,
but not including 302 factories, 910 workplaces, and 331 outworkers'
premises.
Including all factories, workshops, workplaces, and outworkers'
premises, there were on the Register at the end of 1908
3,347 premises, compared with 3,281 in 1907, 3,096 in 1906, 3,045
in 1905, 2,987 in 1904, and 2,676 in 1903.
The total number of inspections made during the year was
5,801, compared with 6,048 in 1907, 5,997 in 1906, 4,933 in 1905,
and 4,946 in 1904.
The total number of notices served was 434, 403 intimation
and 31 statutory, compared with 453 in 1907, 427 in 1906, 462 in
1905, and 465 in 1904.
There was only one prosecution under the Public Health
(London) Act, 1891, for the emission of black smoke.
Under the head of other workshops are included domestic
workshops, and under the head of places where food is prepared
for sale are included the kitchens of hotels, restaurants, tripe,
fried fish and eel shops, and other places where food is prepared
for sale.
In all 614 inspections were made of 302 factories, and 51
notices, 48 intimation and three statutory, were served.
The total number of workshops on the Register was 1,804,
149 of which were workshop laundries, 160 workshop bakehouses,
and 1,495 other workshops.
The increase in the number of workshop laundries is due to
the repeal of Section 103 of the Factory and Workshop Act, 1901.
All laundries where there is employment are now classed as workshops.
