The Sub-Committee endeavour each year to renovate, wholly or
in part, one of the buildings under their charge. Last summer the
whole of the Tooting Library was re-painted and decorated.
A list of the Donors who have kindly presented books, etc., to
the libraries during the past year is given 011 pages 305 and 306.
The rapid development now taking place in the district of
Tooting and the increasing use that is being made of the Library
(the generous gift of Sir William J. Lancaster, J.P., L.C.C.) will
necessitate at an early date an extension of the building. The
accommodation for books in the Lending Library is becoming
inadequate for the requirements of the neighbourhood, and it is
expected that by the end of the present year all the available
space in this department will be taken up. More room for the public
is also needed in front of the counter to relieve the crowding which
occurs on busy evenings, making it somewhat difficult for readers to
refer to the indicator or choose their books from the show-cases.
The Reading Room is likewise very largely attended, and though
accommodati-11 has been provided for about 90 readers as many as 100
persons are, occasionally, to be found in the Room at one time.
At the Tate Library the increasing demand for works of
reference is an indication that the establishment of a separate room
for reference library purpjses cannot long be delayed. Last year the
number of books consulted at the Streatham Library was 5,630 as
distinct from those issued for home reading.
