years have been stated at lower figures than was correct.
Bearing that fact in mind it will be found that the year
1890 will not compare unfavourably with preceding
years.
Births and
Birth-rate.
The number of births registered during the
year was 1,003,—463 of boys, and 540 of girls.
This is a smaller number than in any year of the last
ten years and gives a rate of 23.2 which is also lower
than in any year. The rate of natural increase was 9.32.
Deaths and.
Death-rate.
The number of deaths was 599, of which 293
were of males, and 306 of females. The deathrate
was 13.88 per thousand. The deaths show an
increase over 1889 of 65, and were 48 more than in 1888.

deaths, death-rates, and rates of natural increase for the
last 10 years.
