CLAPHAM.
Population.
The population of the sub-district in the
middle of 1890, obtained by making use of the result of
the census taken in April of this year is 43,138.
If the rate of increase that obtained in the ten years
1871 to 1881 had been maintained the population would
have been 47,372.
The increase since 1881 has therefore been 6,758
instead of 10,992 as estimated. This shows the
imperative need for a more frequent census if vital
statistics are to be a reliable indication of the state of
health.
It must be borne in mind, in comparing the figures in
the following statistics with those of previous reports,
that the population has been over estimated during the
last five years and that the mortality rates for those
