this is the figure on which the various vital statistics in this report
are based. No doubt next year they will all need revision, when
we know the enumerated population.
The estimated population for 1909 was 92,389, so that during
the year under review the increase of population has been 2,332.

The following table shows the yearly increase per cent. for each year since the last Census:—

Increase of population during the year.Increase per cent.
1901-19022,0762.8
1902-19032,8293.7
1903-19045,7757.3
1904-19059861.5
1905-19061,6641.9
1906-19073,3443.7
1907-19085930.6
1908-19091,5751.7
1909-19102,3322.4

The rate of growth again appears to be gradually increasing.
The table shows the marked fluctuations in the rate of increase
over so short a period as 9 years. This year's increase is almost
up to the average yearly increase since the 1901 Census.
The population of the Borough at the 1901 Census was 72,056.
The mean population of 1910 is estimated to be 94,721. The
increase of population in the 9¼ years from the date of the Census
was therefore 22,665. This is equal to an average yearly increase
of 2,450, so that the year's increase 1909-1910 is 112 below the
yearly average increase. Last year the difference was much
greater.
The "natural increase" of population during 1910, i.e.,
excess of births over deaths, was 656. Owing to the falling birthrate
this "natural increase" is becoming less every year, and the
district is practically dependent for its growth on attracting
residents from other districts.
The estimated population at the end of each Quarter of 1910
was as follows:—
End of first quarter 94,164
,, second ,, 94,186
,, third ,, 94,516
,, fourth ,, 95,413
