Population.—The estimate of the population of the
Borough, on which all the vital statistics are based, is arrived at
by multiplying the number of occupied houses in the Borough, as
shown in the rate books, by the average number of occupants per
house, as found at the last Census.
The first factor is reliable, but it is very doubtful whether
the number of persons per house is the same now as ten years ago.
In some parts of the Borough it is manifestly incorrect, owing to
the increasing number of houses in these portions of the Borough
which are now accommodating several families in place of the
single family for which the house was originally intended and
used.
In the absence of a more frequent Census, probably this
method of estimation is the best available in a district like
Hornsey. On this basis the population for 1910 is 94,721, and
