In the Westminster Infirmary 118 confinements took place, and in
Sheffield Street Hospital 23 confinements occurred during the year.
Puerperal Fever and Mortality in Childbirth.—Ten cases of puerperal
fever occurred with two deaths. Full inquiry was made into the circumstances
in each case.
Three deaths occurred from complications connected with pregnancy,
one woman died from acute pleurisy during the month after confinement.
There were also two deaths ascribed to abortion.
At the North Centre, 60, Greek Street, 47 classes were held by Dr.
Lewin for Nasal Hygiene, especially in connection with cases of adenoids
and faulty nasal conditions.

Infancy and Early Childhood.—The number of visits paid by the Health Visitors in the four areas into which the City was divided is shown in the accompanying table:—

To the Pimlico and Bessborough Street figures have to be added visits paid by the
midwife, viz., pre-natal, 570; children under 1, 1,266.
The visits paid by the midwives at Rochester Row centre are included above.
To the Greek Street centre figures have to be added visits paid by the midwives,
viz., 198 pre-natal and 349 infant visits.
Infant Medical Inspection.—Clinics for this purpose are held at each
of the Centres and show an increased attendance at Bessborough Street,
Rochester Road and Greek Street.
