Males.—Up to the age of 15, the number of deaths was less than in
the previous year, above that age there were slight increases in each period
up to 45 ; between 45 and 65 the increase was 37, and above 65 it was 31.
Influenza and chest diseases accounted for 58 extra deaths, and diseases
of the heart and bloodvessels for 22. Tuberculosis gave 10 extra and
locomotor ataxia and general paralysis (both after effects of syphilis),
gave 11 extra. These were counterbalanced by decreases in diarrhoea
and enteritis 13, cancer and malignant growths 10, old age 15, suicide and
murder 7, and other smaller figures.
Among females there was a considerable decrease under 2 years of
age, with slight increases at each age period up to 45, between 45 and 65
there was an increase of 48 deaths, and above 65 years of 90. The net
increase was 130.
Here again influenza and respiratory disease accounted for a considerable
proportion, viz., 55 extra deaths, cancer for 20, tuberculosis for
34, heart, &c., 15, alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver 6. Except as
regards diarrhoea and enteritis, in which there was a decrease of 8, the
deaths from other complaints were about the same as in 1921.

Table: The deaths in the first quarter of the year were the heaviest due to the prevalence of influenza and pneumonia. The third quarter was abnormally low owing to the absence of diarrhoea. The deaths were distributed as follows :—
