a large influx of both males and females into the City after the age of
20. In the St. George, Hanover Square, and the Strand Registration
area, the increase begins at the age of 17, especially among females, in
the Westminster (St. James and Soho) district the increase begins at
the same age, and is chiefly in the males, who predominate in this part
of the City.
There is a marked deficiency in children under the age of 15 in the
City as compared with London, and greater still when compared with
the whole of England and Wales, which, taken at 100, shows London
several points below and Westminster between 50 and 60. On looking
at the status of the population of Westminster as regards marriage, it
appears that 37,225 of the female population between the ages of 15 and
45 are unmarried or widowed and 15,999 are married. Comparing
these figures with those of England and Wales, the proportion per 1,000
at this age period is :—
Unmarried and widowed—England and Wales, 494; Westminster, 700;
Married „ „ 506; „ 300;
which accounts to some extent for the deficiency in the number of
children in the population, and for the apparently low birth-rate when
calculated on the population as a whole; but, of course, the excess of
persons over 20 years of age in the population unduly depresses the
figures given as the proportion of children :—

Birthplaces of Persons Enumerated at the Census.—»London.—The
proportion of London-born persons in the total population has increased
from 62,096 persons per 100,000 population in 1861 to 68,228 in 1911;
the proportion of persons born in other parts of England, Scotland, and
Ireland has decreased. The proportion of foreigners has increased
from 1,459 in 1861 to 3,384 per 100,000 in 1911; the proportion at the
previous Census (1901) being 2,984.
Westminster ranks as fourth of the Metropolitan Boroughs which
have the largest proportion of British subjects by parentage. It also
