Notice of intention to submit for analysis was given by
the Inspector in two instances, at shops where adulterated
samples of milk had previously been obtained. In the one
instance the sample was found to be skimmed, but not
watered; in the other, the sample was watered to the extent
of 25 per cent.: the vendor was prosecuted, convicted, and
fined 30s. and costs.
The two adulterated samples of butter contained other
fats not injurious to health; one of them was brought by a
private purchaser.
The three adulterated samples of tea were sold at a very
low price, and contained a small proportion of "lie tea;"
they contained no leaves other than those of tea.
The three adulterated samples of coffee contained chicory,
one in very small quantity; the other two being labelled as
containing it.
The two adulterated samples of mustard contained wheatflour.
