The streets of this Parish, in common with those of
others, were undoubtedly at times during the period
referred to in a very dirty condition; every exertion, however,
was made to have them kept clean, but the
accumulation of slop was so overwhelming that it was
quite impossible to do so in a satisfactory manner. I may
add also, and I think with truth, that the streets of this
Parish are under equal conditions, always kept as clean
and in as good repair as those of any other Parish in the
Metropolis.
I may mention also an improvement, which was carried
out with the view to protect the property of that portion of
South Belgravia abutting on the river Thames from being
inundated during heavy floods. The roadway known as
the Grosvenor Road (from St. George's Square to opposite
Messrs. Simpson's factory,) has been considerably raised,
some portions as much as 3 feet 6 inches. So far, this improvement
has been successful, for during the last flood (in
November, 1875,) which is stated, I believe, to have been
the highest ever known, the water did not reach the
centre of the roadway by several inches. The cost of
this work was £252, towards which His Grace the Duke
of Westminster contributed £100.

The following statement shews the quantity of material used in the maintenance and repairs of the various roads in the Parish, and the total amount expended, including labour:—
