pave with their wood pavement the portion of Piccadilly
between Park-lane and Hamilton-place. The total area
paved is 1,635 super, yards, of which 1,164 yards was
paid for by J. G. Leigh, Esq. The remainder, 471 yards, was
done at the expense of the Parish. The work was executed
at the rate of 16s. per square yard, exclusive of excavation.
The pavement laid down in the portion of Piccadilly between
St. James's-street and Berkeley-street, which was
done in September 1873, has worn exceedingly well, and
apart from the question of expense, there can he no doubt
that for safety, cleanliness, and noiselessness, this description
of pavement is preferable to any other.
Maintenance of Footways and Carriageways.
There have been constantly employed during the last
year, in the various repairs, &c., four masons and four
paviours they have re-laid various portions of the foot and
carriageways which were worn, sunk, or broken, using new
materials supplied by contract where the old was not fit
to re-lay; they have also made good, pavements disturbed
for gas, water, and buildings, &c.
They have used during the year 754 super, yards of
new 3 in. and 726 super, yards of 2£ in. York paving.
Tar pavement has been laid by Messrs. Mowlem & Co.,
on the footway on the north side of Grosvenor-road, between
Caledonia-street and Rutland-street.
This paving was laid at 2s. 3d. per yard super., and
promises to prove comparatively cheap and useful for footpaths
of ordinary traffic.
