mortality in childhood.
Infant Consultations.—"At the Consultations each infant is examined and weighed; inquiry is
made as to health and method of feeding, and advice of a general character is given. The mother is
recommended to obtain treatment from her own doctor or a hospital if it is required. Records are kept
of the weights and progress of each child.
" The year's work at the Consultations is here summarised.

Dinners and Milk.—" Dinners have been supplied by St. Mary's Kitchen to expectant and nursing
mothers on the recommendation of the physicians at the charge of a penny a meal. Grants of free meals
were made when it was evident that the mother or child would suffer without such assistance, but these
grants are reserved for cases of emergency and exceptional distress, which cases are referred to the
Charity Organisation Society for investigation and report. Grants of free milk have been made on the
same conditions.
" Half-cream dried milk has been tried for the first time. It was used successfully in several cases
during the hot weather, the mothers, when able, paying cost price. The preparation called 'The
Marylebone Cream for Infants' is also provided at the School, the mothers paying a penny for 3 ozs.,
which is about cost price. It is sold only to those for whom the physicians order it.
" During the year sixty-three free grants of milk, twenty-six of dinners, and six of dried milk were
made. In eighty-seven cases dinners or milk were granted to mothers paying as above."
Mortality among Young Children.
At ages between 1 and 5 years the mortality last year was generally less than the mean rates
for 1906-10, as also were the rates for the second and fifth years of life in comparison with the
rates for 1910. (See below.) The rates here quoted have been obtained from the numbers of
survivors at each age at the end of 1910, and the numbers dying during 1911.
