Pulmonary Tuberculosis (Consumption).— There were 145 deaths during the year from
pulmonary tuberculosis (the form generally known as "consumption") and 18 from acute
phthisis (popularly called "galloping consumption"). In previous reports these two forms have
been included under the one heading " pulmonary tuberculosis." The 163 deaths (90 of males
and 73 of females) were equal to a mortality of 1.14 per 1,000 persons, or 0.09 in excess of the
annual average (1.05) for the five years 1906-10. The rates for the six years are given below :—-
1911. 1910. 1909. 1908. 1907. 1906.

The total number of deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis, according to the RegistrarGeneral's
classification (Quarterly Reports), was 173—10 more than the Departmental total.
The higher total gives a mortality rate of 1.21 per 1,000 persons, as compared with a mean rate of
l-06 for the preceding five years. (See Table 10.) In St. Marylebone only was a higher rate
recorded (1.45), that being also the only other district with a rate for last year above the quinquennial
mean. The increases in the rates recorded last year in Paddington and St. Marylebone were 14
