It will be seen that the number of males exceeds the number of
females as far as age 14, but from then onwards the number of females
exceeds the number of males in an almost continually increasing ratio
until in the age group 85 to 89 there are more than double the number
of females to males—901 compared with 414. It will also be seen
that there were 33 women over the age of 95 and 11 men of that age
group (compared with 20 and 7 ten years previously). Taking 65 for men
and 60 for women as the retiring age the number of "old people" in the
borough was 10,177 men and 24,052 women making 34,229 persons
in all (against 9,508, 21,199 and 30,707 respectively in 1951).
Ages of juveniles
With regard to persons under the age of 21, there were 32,678
(31,533) males and 32,466 (32,288) females in Lewisham. The distribution
in the various ages was as follows:
