The 1961 Census
A report on the County of London, compiled from the census
which took place in April 1961, has been recently published by HM
Stationery Office and the following data, in the main relating to Lewisham,
have been extracted from it. To give added interest any figures given in
italics in brackets show the corresponding statistic from the 1951 census.
The total population in the City and County was 3,200,484
(3,347,982), a decline of 147,000 persons since the 1951 census. A
decrease was common to all boroughs except Hampstead, Stoke
Newington, Kensington and Wandsworth. Lewisham showed a decrease
of 5,823 persons, the total population at the census being 221,753
(227,576). Ward populations varied from 7,668 (Culverley) to 17,657
(South Lee). The persons per acre in the wards varied from 22.7 (South
Lee) to 48.0 (Grove Park). The persons per room varied from 0.60
(Culverley) to 0.87 (Bellingham) and the percentage of persons living
more than 1½ per room varied from 2.0 (St. Andrew's) to 9-9 (Grove
Park), the average for the whole borough being 5 •9 (8 . 3). Details follow:

It will be seen that only 4 wards have an increased population compared
with 1951, the biggest increase being in Sydenham W, followed
by Blackheath and Church Lee, Ladywell and South Lee (very few only
in these last two). The largest decrease is in Grove Park.
