(4) House and Trade Refuse Collection.—Sixteen low-loading hygienic horsedrawn
vans have now been built to own design and by Council's own staff of
mechanics, and are all in service daily. A further three vans are in course of
construction. During the year 1935, 84% of refuse was collected by mechanical
vehicles and 16% by horses and vans.
(5) Disposal.—A scheme for handling the refuse at the Disposal Depot,
Ashburton Grove, is now completed and the construction will be started almost
immediately. This scheme, which is thoroughly up-to-date, will carry out the
loading of railway wagons, etc., irn a most hygienic, cleanly and economic manner.
Both house and trade refuse, and sweepings and gully silt, are sent by rail to
contractors' dumps at Blackbridge and Holwell Hyde, Herts, where the material
is deposited in layers approximately 6 feet in depth, each layer being covered with
9 ins. of soil and otherwise treated in accordance with the recommendations of the
Ministry of Health. The dumps are frequently' inspected by the Cleansing
Committee and myself and by the local Sanitary Authorities.
REMOVAL OF DUST.
23 applications were received during the year by the Public Health Department
for the removal of dust.

Dust Receptacles Provided.—During the year 1,236 dust receptacles
were provided by owners of property under notice.
DISTRICT INSPECTORS' WORK.
During the year the fourteen District Inspectors made a total of 51,811
inspections and calls, an increase of 1,573 inspections on the corresponding period
of 1934; while 16,027 improvements were effected in 6,367 premises; as against
15,262 improvements in 6,168 premises, for the preceding year.
Synopsis of Inspectors' Work.—The following statement gives a brief
synopsis of the district inspectors' work in 1935:—

Notices Served.—There were 5,729 intimation notices served by the
inspectors with respect to nuisances. In 800 instances it became necessary, as
the intimations to owners or occupiers of the properties had been ignored, to report
the nuisances to the Public Health Committee, who ordered statutory notices to
be served.
