SCAVENGING.
Particulars are required in the Annual Report of any extension or improvement
during the year of methods of scavenging or refuse disposal, and a statement
as to the character and efficiency of the arrangements for the removal and disposal
of house refuse.
During the year the Medical Officer of Health visited, with the Cleansing
Superintendent, the dumping grounds where the contractors dispose of Islington
refuse.
Mr. Browning, the Cleansing Superintendent, has kindly supplied me with the
following statement regarding the work during the year:—
(1) Street Sweeping.—A further Hygienic "Bedford" lorry (making four in
all) for receiving the contents of Galvanized sanitary containers installed in orderly
trucks, was put into commission on the 2nd December, 1935. It is now only
necessary to employ five open-type horse-drawn vans on this service.
(2) Street Watering.—The apparatus fitted to horse-drawn vans (used during
the summer months for street watering) has been adapted on all these vans so as
to thoroughly wash the channels of the roads and streets.
(3) Gully Cleansing.—In the very near future an additional mechanical vehicle,
fitted with 1,000 gallons tank and special apparatus for washing down Street
Markets, will be purchased.
