was circulated in the Borough giving- particulars of the cinema display and the
other activities during Health Week, together with a number of health axioms.
During the year the Public Health Committee, Maternity and Child Welfare,
and the Conjoint Committee of the Islington Welfare Centres had before them the
revised draft, prepared by the Medical Officer of Health, of the booklet issued to
Islington mothers upon receipt of the notification of a birth. This booklet now
contains information of the special services of the department, the names and
addresses of the Registrars of Births and Deaths, of the Relieving Officers, the
District Medical Officers and Public Vaccinators, and the Vaccination Officers,
how to apply for food or milk under the Maternity and Child Welfare Scheme,
visitation by Health Visitors, the address of the Islington Voluntary Welfare
Centres and the Tuberculosis Dispensaries.
The following are the leaflets issued from the department:—" Hints on the
Care and Feeding of Infants, for the guidance of Mothers," "Flies and Gnats,"
"Measles," "Whooping Cough," " Diphtheria," "Scarlet Fever," "Infectious
Disease—Law," " Smallpox and Vaccination."
The Maternity and Child Welfare Committee sent two delegates, Councillors
Miss Grace Watson and Mrs. Pannell, to the Conference of the Women Sanitary
Inspectors' and Health Visitors' Association held at Caxton Hall, Westminster,
in February. At the same meeting the Medical Officer of Health introduced a
discussion on the registration of Health Visitors.

OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM AND OPHTHALMIA.
Ophthamia Neonatorum is an inflammatory disease with purulent discharge
occurring in the eyes of infants within three weeks of birth.
78 cases of Ophthalmia Neonatorum were notified, compared with 136 cases
last year.
59 cases of Ophthalmia were reported by the London County Council and
Health Visitors as against 74 cases during the previous year.
35 out of the 78 cases of Ophthamia Neonatorum were attended at birth by
midwives.
