Of the 78 cases investigated, both of the infants' eyes were effected in 58
instances, whilst in 9 the right eye was involved, and in 10 the left. One case
subsequently left the district.
Treatment.—11 of the 78 Ophthalmia Neonatorum cases were admitted to
St. Margaret's Hospital, 27 being treated at other hospitals.
40 cases were treated at home by private Doctors.
36 cases of inflammatory disease of infants' eyes were nursed by the North
London Nursing Association for the Council at a cost of £34 2s. In 1927 54
cases were nursed at the cost of £59 12s.
Results.—Of the 78 Ophthalmia Neonatorum cases, vision was unimpaired
in all cases.

There was one fatal case during the year.

MATERNAL DEATHS.
The number of women dying in, or in consequence of, child-birth during the
year 1928 was 25, or 4.3 per 1,000 registered births. Of this number 10 occurred
from Sepsis (Puerperal Septicaemia); whilst 15 died from other diseases of childbirth.
The deaths for the preceding year numbered 24 and were equal to the proportion
of 3.9 per 1,000 births.
