shop was found to be very poorly lit and the attention of the occupier was
drawn to this matter. Negotiations are still in progress.
Sanitary Conveniences
These were mostly found to be adequate in number and in satisfactory
condition when used exclusively by one firm. Where they were shared, the
standard of cleanliness and repair was found to be not so high. Owners or
occupiers were notified on 112 occasions of various contraventions.
Washing Facilities
The lack of a supply of hot water has again been found to be the most
frequent contravention. In a number of cases where reinspections were being
carried out it has been found that either the heater was defective or had
been removed since last visiting. A total of 108 contraventions was found.
Floors, Passages and Stairs
Attention was drawn to 98 owners or occupiers of premises in regard to
contraventions under this section, which were mostly worn treads or risers
and absence of substantial handrails.
First Aid
It was found necessary to notify 182 employers that the existing first
aid outfits were inadequate or that none was provided at the time of inspection.
(3) Accidents
During the year no fatal accidents were reported. The number of accidents
notified was 35, a reduction of 14 on the previous year. Ten of these
were investigated and the table below sets out the primary cause and in
which type of premises they occurred:-
