Summary of Accidents Invetigated
Falls of all kinds, including from steps and staircases
These again formed the greatest proportion of the more serious type of
accident, being ten in number. Five of these were investigated, of which
two were falls from stepladders, which on inspection were found to be in a
satisfactory condition, and the remainder were persons slipping on floor
surfaces. Informal advice was given in all those cases investigated.
Machinery
This involved an employee closing an outer lift door on her hand. On
investigation the gates and all other parts of the lift were found to be
in order.
Transport
This occured in a warehouse which employed fork lift trucks to stack
pallets of crates containing bottles, and one of these trucks struck a man
on the arm whilst it was turning.
Fires
This accident occurred in a catering establishment. A main gas tap to
a range of cookers had been turned off by the manageress on leaving the
premises in the late eveing, but a tap on one of the cookers had been inadvertently
left slightly on. When an assistant tried to light the oven the
following morning with a taper there had been a build-up of gas, which caused
a slight explosion, singeing her hair and causing some shock.
Advice was given regarding the necessity of ensuring that all gas taps
were fully turned off.
Electricity
An assistant switched on an amusement machine and received an electric
shock due to a short circuit. The cause of the short circuit was immediately
rectified by the resident electrician.
Use of Hand Tools
A carpenter in catering premises cut his thumb whilst refixing a towel
rail.
