Some 190 contacts were examined and B.C.G. given to 120.
Thirty-six Mantoux positive schoolchildren were referred for
examination but no case of active disease was found.
Forty-three patients were found to have carcinoma of the lung.
Many patients with other chest diseases, especially bronchitis
and asthma were referred to the Chest Clinic during the year.
Our Welfare Officer gives advice and assistance with a wide
range of domestic, occupational and personal problems of our
patients. Many recuperative holidays have been arranged and
special food and clothing provided where necessary. In urgent
cases special housing preference is recommended.
Our Occupational Therapist now holds a diversional therapy
class at Riverdale Centre, 158a Plumstead High Street, S.E.I8 on
Thursday 2 4 p.m. and at Sherard Hall, Congregation Church,
Court Road, Eltham on Monday 2-4 p.m. by the courtesy of the
Greenwich Council. She also visits our housebound patients in
their homes and provides them with interesting and profitable
hobbies."
Mass Radiography
Introduced primarily for the early detection of tuberculosis, the
Mass Radiography service is responsible for revealing many other
chest malformations and disabilities which would doubtless have
remained undetected perhaps for years.
As a direct consequence of the diagnosis of these ailments treatment is made possible at a very early stage, thereby enabling a
much more favourable prognosis to be entertained.
Although no major surveys were undertaken, in addition to
attendances at regular sites, short visits covering public and factory
surveys (with attention to special groups in each category) were
carried out in the Borough during the year by the South East
London Mass Radiography Unit. Dr. J. M. Morgan, the Director
