Following the conferences, letters were sent to all schools
reiterating the facilities offered by the Service and suggesting that
a discussion with a member of the health education team would
prove profitable.
The following facilities were offered and supported by a copy of
the attractive catalogue of "Visual Aids in Health Education"
prepared and published by the Service:—
(i) Provision of films, filmstrips and other visual aid teaching
material.
(ii) Supply of leaflets and posters.
(iii) Advice, assistance and reference services in Health Education,
topics and communication techniques.
(iv) Provision of displays and topic material.
(v) Provision of specialist speakers and health education programmes.
Although effective response was only moderate, many new links
were established with schools in the Borough, and also with the
local College of Education.
In subsequent months the facilities of the Service, in particular
items (i), (ii) and (v) above, were called upon on 87 occasions.
Whilst the contribution of schools towards the integration of
health education within the school curriculum remains disappointingly
low, the start made amongst the 152 schools in the Borough
should provide a stable foundation for future development.
3. HEALTH CENTRES
The Directorate has 13 permanent and 12 part-time Health
Centres.
The support services provided by the Health Education Service
is aimed at up-dating and sophisticating health education activities
in these centres. A monthly health education meeting is held to
which representatives from each centre are invited, together with
other professionals such as public health inspectors, social workers,
etc. New material and educational developments are reviewed and
discussion held on effective activities.
The Service also provides visual aid, poster, leaflet, display and
projectionist facilities for all centres. Routine distribution of
material is carried out each month in connection with the monthly
topics mentioned earlier.
Projectionist and projected aid facilities were used on 132
occasions during 1969.
Cytology clinics are held at selected centres, and use is made
of the 8mm. film loop projector and cassette "Self Examination of
the Breasts" at these clincs. This was used on 52 occasions.
