4. THE DIRECTORATE AND OTHER DEPARTMENTS OF
THE COUNCIL
The Service provides many facilities for other Branches of the
Directorate and the Council generally due to the reservoir of
knowledge and expertise. Previews of specialist films (31), advice
and assistance with displays (11), provision of expert help and
health education services in "in-service" courses (28). Also advice
and assistance in the preparation of posters, leaflets and campaign
material is freely given.
The expertise of the Service was also sought on a number of
occasions by bodies outside the Council, e.g. London Boroughs'
Training Committee, London Borough of Hammersmith; Schools
Broadcasting Council; London Regional Water Safety Committee;
Goldsmiths College.
Two "in-service" courses on the use of visual aids were given by
the Service and in co-operation with the Health Education Council
an "in-service" course on "The Health of the Family" was arranged
for all staff early in the year.
The film "They Have a Future" made by the Service continued
to have wide use. Work was commenced on the production of
another film, on Old People's Services in the Borough.
5. HOME SAFETY
The Service has special responsibility for the promotion of home
safety in the Borough. Whenever possible, aspects of home safety
are integrated within the fields of activity of the Service. At least two
month's programmes are specially devoted to this subject and every
endeavour is made to maximise publicity on the aspect chosen.
During 1969 the subjects of Falls and Poisoning were highlighted,
with special campaign activity and press coverage. Talks by the
Home Safety Officer featured in programmes given to local organisations
and, where the subject matter in a film show is mainly
concerned wth another aspect of health, a film on home accident
prevention is frequently included.
Emphasis on home safety is included as part of displays produced
by the Service and advice is frequently sought of the Home Safety
Officer by those in the Council having responsibility for others,
particularly children and the elderly.
Many of the badges and awards provided by youth organisations,
such as the Girls Life Brigade; Guides; Adventure Corps; incorporate
home safety. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
contains a special section. The Home Safety Officer is frequently
called upon to provide training courses in respect of these awards
and to act as adjudicator to prospective candidates.
