Posters and Leaflets
Aspects of health education are selected from the list (see
Appendix) for special emphasis for each month of the year. In
addition, material on topical subjects arising during the year are
included in the routine distribution.
The distribution of posters and leaflets is aimed at maximising
the number displayed in places where the general public pass or
are congregated. Thus, in addition to the health centres, distribution
includes general practitioner and dentist waiting rooms, libraries,
public enquiry points and counters in Council premises, public
poster sites and railway station poster boards.
2. SCHOOLS
A rapidly growing aspect of the Health Education Service
Activity is School Health Education. Sterling work is carried out in
schools by health visitors, school sisters, medical officers and others
employed in the school health service. However, for any large
expansion in school health education activity to take place, it is
imperative that teachers, intimately concerned in school activities
and in the day to day lives of all pupils, should undertake and
participate in health education.
Mention was made in my 1968 Report of the proposed conferences
of head teachers in the Borough of Greenwich under the
aegis of the Divisional Education Officer.
The conferences took place early in February and were divided
into primary and secondary education.
The programme for each conference was as follows:—
(a) Welcome and Introduction by a District Inspector of the
I.L.E.A.
(b) "Greenwich Health and Welfare Department" Dr. C. C. A.
Jansz, Senior Medical Officer.
(c) "Dental Health Education" Mr. F. Elston, Principal School
Dental Officer.
(d) "What is Health Education?" Mr. J. E. Kay, Health Education
Officer.
(e) "Greenwich Health Education Service" (including demonstration
of visual aids).
(f) Discussion.
Both conferences were well attended and the immediate response
was gratifying, many of the teachers present expressing surprise at
the quantity, quality and variety of educational aids available in
the field.
