Smoke Control Areas
In the autumn, preliminary arrangements for the formation of
the Little Heath, St. Nicholas, Woolwich Town Centre and
Thamesmead Smoke Control Areas were completed and the Council
declared the Areas on 29th October, 1969. Details of each of
the Areas are as follow:—
Little Heath
This is an area of predominantly private property comprising
some 150 acres and 1,314 dwellings of which it is estimated 695
will require some form of conversion or adaptation. Of the total
dwellings 254 are Borough Council, 76 Greater London Council
and 984 privately owned and, in addition, there are 38 nondomestic
premises. The Minister of Housing and Local Government
confirmed 1st July, 1971, as the operative date of the Area
Order.
St. Nicholas
This area comprises some 80 acres and 1,490 dwellings of which
it is estimated that 1,005 will require some form of conversion or
adaptation. Of the total dwellings 54 are Borough Council, 8 are
Greater London Council and 1,428 privately owned. In addition
there are 65 non-domestic premises. The Minister of Housing and
Local Government confirmed 1st July, 1971, as the operative date
of the Area Order.
Woolwich Town Centre
This is an area of predominantly business and industrial
premises comprising some 130 acres and 295 dwellings of which
it is estimated that 56 will require some form of conversion or
adaptation. Of the total dwellings 64 are Borough Council, 2
Greater London Council and 229 privately owned. In addition
there are 322 non-domestic premises. The Minister of Housing
and Local Government confirmed 1st July, 1971, as the operative
date of the Area Order.
Thamesmead
This is an area of some 900 acres and although erection of
dwellings has not yet commenced, approximately 11,000 dwellings
are likely to be built, commencing towards the end of 1970.
Although 65% of these dwellings will be Greater London Council
owned, the remaining 35% will be provided by private development.
The proposed dwellings should be suitably equipped to
comply with the requirements of the Clean Air Acts, 1956 and
1968, therefore, no conversions or adaptations will be necessary.
The operative date is 1st July, 1971.
