provided. This is dealt with more fully elsewhere in this Report.
The Section co-operates by providing extra assistance where
required. In all, 57 calls were made upon the facilities of the
Section.
The Section also undertook the provision of posters and
leaflets in conjunction with the monthly programme of topics and
other issues of health education material.
Other Services within the Department—The Section cooperated with many other Sections of the Department in the provision of assistance, notices, posters, and the showing of films of
professional interest. Catalogues of posters, leaflets, films and
filmstrips available are being prepared. A series of in-service
lectures on successful instruction and demonstration of visual aids
is planned for all interested staff. In December, assistance was
given in the organisation of the showing of the film "Examination
of the Newborn" not only to professional staff within the Department, but also to G.P.'s and G.P.O.'s practising in the Borough.
Careers Exhibition—A one-day Careers Exhibition arranged
in the Borough was participated in by the Department. A continuous slide projector was hired and slides produced of members
of the staff at work in the Borough. This combination of local
evidence and information on the various professions within the
Department available to school leavers proved to be effective and
resulted in a number of enquiries.
British Red Cross—A request was received from the local
division of the British Red Cross Society for the provision of a
course of lectures on Hygiene and Public Health. This proved to
be an interesting assignment as the syllabus was extremely comprehensive. It was covered by a series of 12 lectures enlisting
the support of a large range of professional staff of the Department. Thanks are due to all those who helped to make this
venture a success.
Fouling by Dogs—Warning Notices—This scheme originally
in operation in Woolwich was extended to cover the new area.
Fouling of pavements by dogs is an endemic nuisance and the
Ipractice of displaying warning notices drawing attention to the
Council's Bye-law prohibiting this does result in a lessening of
the problem in the most affected areas.
Smoking and Health—National publicity campaigns in this
problem have received active participation locally by display of
posters at Council establishments and on boards on hire round
the Borough. Leaflets have been distributed on request to youth
clubs on several occasions and two film programmes have been
shown.
