Venereal Disease—Laminated plastic notices resistant to
vandalism were produced and erected in all conveniences in the
Borough. The notices give details of where confidential treatment
may be obtained and urge early consultation. Leaflets are in
course of production along similar lines with additional information to be available on request.
Requests have been received from youth leaders for leaflets
on a number of occasions and films on the subject have been
shown in some schools in the area.
Safety in the Home.
It is little realised, mainly due to lack of "news" value, that
accidents in the home account for more accidental deaths than
any other cause, even on the roads. Since accidents are primarily
caused through individual carelessness, it remains a problem of
education to ensure that everybody is made aware of the hazards
that await in every home. This problem received special consideration in the education activities of the Council. A Home
Safety Sub-Committee of the Health Committee was formed and
had its inaugural meeting in June. The Sub-Committee meets
quarterly and its terms of reference are as follows:—
(a) To carry on a continual propaganda campaign locally to
inform the public of the extent and gravity of the Home
Accident problem.
(b) To enlist the support of all interested municipal and
social organisations for this campaign.
(c) To investigate local Home Accident cases and their
causes.
(d) To investigate possible remedies.
(e) To effect any necessary liaison with the National and
Area Home Safety Committees set up by the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Accidents and, in particular,
to participate if considered desirable in any home safety
campaigns conducted by these Committees.
The Sub-Committee is also empowed to partake in the
National Water Safety Campaign.
The Sub-Committee considered various matters during the
remainder of the year, an early decision resulting in the appointment of a Home Safety Officer and the initiation of several campaigns and ventures, the more notable of which are listed below :—
1. Artificial Respiration Demonstrations (detailed above).
2. Production of a Home Safety Leaflet for broadcast
distribution.
