Public Functions—The opportunity was taken at 6 other
functions attended by the public to arrange for the showing of a
film on mouth to mouth resuscitation with accompanying demonstrations by Bath's Department staff on the "resusci-anne" model.
These demonstrations attracted great interest and stimulated
personal participation.
Shop Window Displays—In October, the use of a shop
window adjacent to the main shopping thoroughfare in Woolwich
was placed at the disposal of the Department. The opportunity
was taken to mount a display illustrating the safe use of fireworks.
This attracted considerable attention and is undoubtedly a
valuable method of publicity. Festival of Christmas activities of
the Council prohibited the use of a window again for the remainder
of the year, but formal arrangements were made for the use of
the window whenever possible.
In addition a small display window at the entrance to one of
the Council Offices is to be allocated for one month to each of
the Departments. This Department's tenure commences in
January, 1966, and the proposed display is to be devoted to the
role of the Health Visitor.
Holiday Film Shows—Film shows were arranged at 4 centres
during the summer months to which children were invited. The
films shown illustrated health education topics and included films
of general interest.
At three showings audience expectations were not fully
realised, possibly due to the timing of the events which occurred
at the peak of the holiday season. It is planned to hold a further
series in the Easter holidays when greater participation is anticipated. The fourth showing, held at a different time in a housing
estate elicited an overwhelming response showing that, with
calculated timing, this can be a very effective method of bringing
home the health education message to young people.
Old People's Homes—Pending arrangements being made by
the Entertainments Officer, the Section undertook the provision
of regular autumn and winter entertainment programmes at the
four residential homes for the elderly in the Borough. In all,
17 programmes were arranged at fortnightly intervals for each
home. These programmes were enthusiastically received and were
welcomed as a high spot in the life of the residents.
Welfare Centres and Schools—Assistance was provided in the
shape of equipment, films, film strips and other visual media as
requested by Health Visitors in Centres and Schools. A continuous programme of health education is given to expectant and
nursing mothers and fully developed instruction in child care is
