106
elderly citizens were supplied in respect of enquiries from firms
and other organisations who desired to distribute their own gifts
and parcels.
We are greatly indebted to all who gave their time and
assistance in packing, distributing and raising private funds in order
to bring a little of the Christmas Spirit into the homes of so many
of our elderly citizens.
Old People's Clubs—Christmas Parties—These Old People's
Clubs held their Christmas Parties in the Minor Hall during
December, 1963, and January, 1964, and they all proved very
successful. Our sincere thanks are extended to the Greenwich
Borough Council for their continued co-operation in granting free
lettings of the Minor Hall, inclusive of floral decorations, on these
occasions.
Frozen Christmas Dinners—As in past years consideration was
given to those elderly citizens who were known to be entirely alone
at Christmas with no one to cook for them. Twenty-four frozen
Christmas Dinners were purchased and were delivered on Christmas Eve by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis to whom we are greatly indebted
for giving up their time in connection with this very essential
service.
Concerts—A concert for elderly persons was held in the
Borough Hall on the 1st October, 1963, experienced artistes having
been engaged. 450 elderly citizens attended and so enjoyed the
evening's entertainment that a further concert was held on the
21st of April, 1964. On this occasion also, the ground floor of
the Borough Hall was filled almost to capacity and the entertainment provided was thoroughly appreciated.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Gardener
and members of the Women's Voluntary Service for carrying out
the catering on these occasions.
Outing to Kent—On the 11th and 12th July, 1963, two parties
of 20 invalids visited the home of the Medical Officer of Health
and his wife, tea being provided on the lawn. We are very grateful
indeed to the Medical Officer of Health and Mrs. Kerr Brown for
their wonderful hospitality on these occasions.
Visiting Scheme—Two boys, members of the Young Christian
Workers and a young girl, a member of the Girl Guides Association have been visiting three of our senior citizens throughout the
year and carrying out small tasks around the home. The visits
average one or two per week, and it is most encouraging to note
the way that these young people give up their time to provide
company and assistance to elderly citizens.
