and holiday parties are being arranged fortnightly throughout the
year. In all it is expected that nearly 800 elderly citizens will
spend a fortnight at the Hotel during 1964.
As our contribution towards this service, we have made a
grant of £200 for the purchase of amenities, i.e., television set,
rose trees and deck chairs in the garden and a teak bench with a
plaque bearing the Association's name.
Street Appeal and House to House Collection—We reported
at the last Annual Meeting that the Worshipful The Mayor
(Councillor Mrs. I. M. Scales, J.P.) had offered to make application
on behalf of the Association to hold a House-to-House Collection
and Street Appeal in aid of the Association's funds.
The Appeal was held in the 1st week of September, 1963, and
it gives us very great pleasure indeed to report that, despite inclement weather, a total of £226 15s. 1d. was collected. From this
sum an expenditure of £11 3s. 8d. was deducted in respect of the
purchase of emblems and permits leaving a total of £215 l1s. 5d.
which was credited to the Association's Voluntary Funds. We
are very grateful indeed to all those who assisted in the Appeal
and especially to the large number of elderly persons who helped
to collect on the day of the Street Appeal.
Carol Service—The Annual Carol Service was held at St.
Alfege Church on the 2nd December, 1963, and was attended by
approximately 300 elderly citizens. Her Worship the Mayor was
also in attendance accompanied by Chief Officers of the Borough
Council and members of the Executive Committee.
Tea, sandwiches and cakes were served by members of the
Women's Fellowship in the Church Hall after the service and our
sincere thanks are extended to all who helped to make this
occasion so successful.
Christmas Food Parcels for the Homebound—Once again, due
to the generosity of the Greenwich Borough Council by way of a
grant, goods sufficient for 500 parcels of similar content to previous
years were purchased. Members of the Committee and friends met
in the Minor Hall on 6th December, 1963, and packed the parcels
which were distributed by members of the British Red Cross
Society, Women's Voluntary Service, the Committee and the
Association's Meals-on-Wheels staff.
These parcels were given to elderly persons who were
genuinely homebound or aged 85 or over and, in accordance with
normal practice, members of the Greenwich Borough Council were
invited to nominate persons who came within the above two categories. In addition to the above over 300 extra names of deserving
