for elderly persons an approach was made to the Greenwich
Borough Council, as a result of which arrangements were made for
the play to be presented in the Minor Hall on the 11th December,
1961.
Nearly 240 elderly persons attended the play in which 130-140
school children took part. Light refreshments were provided for
the audience and the children, and all who attended were unanimous
in praising the school children for an afternoon of first class entertainment.
We are very grateful indeed to the Headmistress and her staff
for the time and patience given by them in making the costumes
and training the children so efficiently and also to members of the
Women's Voluntary Service and all others who worked so hard
on this occasion.
Film Premier—"The Young Ones"—An invitation having been
received for a party of 20 Old Age Pensioners to visit the Regal
Cinema, Old Kent Road, on the evening of the 17th December
last, arrangements were made for a party consisting of two members
from each of the 10 Old People's Clubs, selected by ballot, to attend
the film premier—"The Young Ones " and letters received after
the event indicated that the party had a very enjoyable evening's
entertainment.
Chipperfields Circus—Thanks to the generosity of the Management
of Chipperfields Circus in allocating complimentary tickets
which were circulated throughout the Old People's Clubs, nearly
270 elderly persons in the Borough were enabled to enjoy a performance
at Blackheath during the week ended 16th September,
1961. The show was greatly enjoyed by those who attended and
numerous letters of appreciation were received.
Welfare Foods for Old People—The receipts for the sale of
welfare foods up to the 31st March, 1962, amounted to
£1,325 lis. 5d. an increase of £181 10s. lid. as compared with the
previous financial year. Many more elderly persons are taking
advantage of this scheme and this naturally reflects itself in the
amount of work involved in distribution which is carried out by
members of the Women's Voluntary Service to whom we are greatly
indebted.
Fifty-seven welfare food permits were issued on behalf of
homebound persons during the past year making a total of 85 in
all and it is anticipated that this scheme will continue to expand.
Street Appeal and House to House Collection—We reported to
you at the last annual meeting that the Worshipful the Mayor had
offered to make application on behalf of the Association to hold
