SECTION E
Inspection and Supervision of Food
Much of the work in connection with our food and food supply is
restricted in so far as the premises and equipment are concerned, due
to damage caused by enemy action. Shortage of labour and materials
which are being devoted to housing priorities restricts the progress
which should normally result from the efforts of our Food Inspectors.
While the peace-time standards have not been reached in all respects,
the traders have shown a willingness to co-operate and with the
improvement of building materials and supplies, even higher
standards than hitherto should be attained. Much time has been
given to the inspection of imported and home-produced foods
with a view to ensuring a wholesome food supply and reducing waste
to a minimum.
Milk Supply.—Under the direction of the Milk Marketing
Board there has been little change in the source of supplies to this
Borough. No milk is produced locally, bulk transport being responsible
for the transit into the Borough of milk produced largely
in the Home Counties.
Only approved designated milks are on sale in this area—raw
milk is unobtainable. Pasteurisation or similar heat-treatment is
general.
Milk and Dairies (Amendment) Act, 1922—Milk and
Dairies Regulations 1926-1943.—At the commencement of the
year, there were 71 purveyors of milk on the Register of Dairies and
Milkshops, 2 new applications have been received during the year
and added to the Register and 2 were struck off, thus leaving a
total of 71 purveyors and dairy premises registered.
Special attention has again been given to dairy premises to
ensure that the provisions of the Milk and Dairies Regulations have
been observed, particularly with regard to washing and cleansing of
milk vessels and utensils, and use of adequate detergent. In all,
198 visits of inspection were made as a result of which the following
defects, etc., were noted and remedied.
Action taken re dairy premises:—

Bottling Machines overhauled 2
