A large Dairy Company was warned that the wording "Certified
Tuberculin Tested Milk " on bottle caps was a breach of the
Order which lays down that the designation should be "Tuberculin
Tested (Certified)."
Result of Analytical Examinations.—143 samples of milk,
including 43 from local hospitals and schools were taken, of which
9 were found to be adulterated or below the standard fixed by the
Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The administrative action
taken is set out in Table on Page 75.
Bacteriological Examinations.—At the request of the London
County Council samples of milk were taken on arrival at the
Brook and St. Alfege's Hospitals and local schools. All samples
taken (48) were found to conform with the requirements of the
Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1936.
During the year five samples examined for tubercle bacilli
were found to be free from infection.
Inspection of Meat and other Foods.—During 1937 the following diseased and unsound goods were voluntarily surrendered at slaughter-houses and shops :—
Beef, Pork, Mutton, Lamb, Offals, etc. | 1,125 lbs. |
Fish | 131 lbs. |
Fruit and Vegetables | 245 lbs. |
Provisions, Confectionery, Sweets | 67 lbs. |
Total Weight | 1,568 lbs. |
Although 3,923 visits have been made to premises where food
is stored, prepared or sold, on no occasion has it been found
necessary to seize unsound food. Confidence is placed in the Public
Health Department and advice is often sought by shopkeepers in
doubt as to the soundness of their stock. During examinations
at slaughter houses the findings of the Inspectors are always
accepted. This is a tribute to their tact and capabilities.
Slaughter-houses and Knackers' Yards.—At the end of
1937 there were 2 slaughter-houses and 1 knackers' yard in the
Borough, all of which are licensed annually. 304 visits were made
to these premises which are maintained. satisfactorily
