[Report of the Medical Officer of Health for Finsbury Borough]

MEASLES:
There were 413 cases notified during the year. Of these 224
were moderately severe and the other 189 mild cases, 29 cases
were removed to hospital. Complications occurred in 17 cases
(four brought on Pneumodia and thirteen Bronchitis). All made a
satisfactory recovery.
MENINGOCOCCAL INFECTION:
One case only was notified during 1961, that of a female child
aged 6 months. The onset was sudden and severe. The child was
removed to hospital and made a very good recovery. Contacts were
kept under supervision and all remained well.
MUMPS:
There were 38 known cases of Mumps, All were mild and made
satisfactory progress. There were no complications.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM:
3 cases were notified during 1961. All responded well to
treatment and no cases of blindness resulted.
PNEUMONIA (Acute Primary):
46 cases were notified in 1961. All were severe cases and all
recovered and there were no deaths.
PNEUMONIA (Acute Influenzal):
7 cases of acute Influenzal Pneumonia occurred during 1961.
No deaths occurred and although all were severe all made a satisfactory
recovery.
POLIOMYELITIS:
During 1961 3 persons were admitted to hospital as possible
cases of Acute Poliomyelitis, but were not confirmed. At the
beginning of the year there were 4 residents of this Borough who
were in contact with a confirmed case. These were kept under
supervision and remained well.
PUERPERAL PYREXIA:
During 1961 7 residents of this Borough developed Puerperal
Pyrexia whilst in hospital. All made very satisfactory progress
and there were no deaths.
