Enteric Fever (11) Paratyphoid;
There were no cases or contacts reported.
Malaria:
There were no cases or contacts reported.
Meningococcal Infection:
One case of Septicaemia was notified in a girl aged 9 years.
She made a good recovery. The family was placed under supervision
and no other cases arose.
Acute and Post Infective Encephalitis:
There were no cases or contacts reported.
Acute Poliomyelitis:
3 cases were notified - 2 paralytic and 1 non-paralytic.
The details of these cases were as follows:-
1. A boy aged 1 year 9 months who developed paralysis of
the left leg in the early summer. He was treated in hospital
but recovered and made good progress with, however, some
residual weakness.
2. A girl aged 4 who developed severe paralysis involving
arms, legs, chest, back also in early summer. She was
treated in hospital and placed in a respirator for about 5
weeks. She made very slow progress and remained in hospital
till the end of the year, but had recovered little movement.
3. A boy aged 8 developed a moderately severe attack but
without paralysis in the early summer. He was treated in
hospital and recovery was complete.
No contact between any of these cases, or between cases Nos.
1 and 3 and any other known case was discovered. Case No.2
attended a school which a child contact of a fatal case also
attended. This latter child was later discovered to have the
virus present in the stools. Both were in the same class.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum:
There was 1 notified case which was not severe and made a
good recovery.
Puerperal Pyrexia:
There was 1 notified case. In addition 16 cases were reported
which developed among Finsbury residents in hospitals outside the
borough. There were no deaths, and all made satisfactory progress.
