Unsound Food. Considerable quantities of unsound foodstuffs were confiscated or surrendered during the year as the following summary shows :—

Food Poisoning.
Eleven cases of Food Poisoning were notified during the year.
There were no deaths.
There was one outbreak of Food Poisoning due to an identified
cause during the year. This incident, which was domestic, occurred
in August and comprised two cases (man and wife). The cases were
originally notified as para-typhoid, but laboratory diagnosis after
admission to hospital proved infection to be food poisoning due to
salmonella typhi-murium.
Two outbreaks due to unidentified causes occurred as under :—
(a) Domestic 4 cases None notified
(August)
(b) Domestic 2 cases Notified
(October)
Suspected cause :
Chicken cooked at home.
Suspected cause :
Beef eaten for lunch.
Apart from the outbreaks detailed above, the following individual
cases were investigated :
1. A case notified in January.
The individual concerned had severe abdominal pain about five
hours after eating fish, followed by vomiting and diarrhoea.
