During the course of the year 2,524 visits were made to the retail
butchers' shops and stalls.
Sixty-six certificates for the export of meat essence, bovril, etc.,
were issued, mostly to U.S.A., Egypt and Canada.
In December a case of food poisoning was notified, the suspected
article being sausage meat manufactured by a butcher in Finsbury.
The matter was fully investigated and no further action found
necessary.
Bakehouses.
There were 19 bakehouses in use at the end of the year, 15 being
basement bakehouses.
Registered Food Premises.
There were no alterations in the register during the year.
Other Food Premises.
There are approximately 500 premises where meals are prepared
and sold in the borough—restaurants, cafes and canteens. All new
premises were inspected and also those where alterations were being
made. All food premises were liable to inspection, and 1,580 visits
were made by the Food Inspector.
Street Markets.
Much food is handled in the Street Markets and the appropriate
Department issued licences for 268 stalls during the year. In each
case any storage accommodation used for foodstuffs was inspected
throughout the year.
Licensed Premises and Public Houses.
There were 136 licensed premises in the Borough, 126 of which
were Public Houses. 100 inspections were carried out.
Listed Sellers of Poisons.
Forty-five applicants were approved by the Council in accordance
with the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933, each of whom were visited.
Unsound Food.
Considerable quantities of unsound foodstuffs were confiscated
or surrendered during the year as the following summary shows :—
