Meat Inspection.
There is in the vicinity of the Smithfield Meat Market a
considerable number of wholesale butchers and offal shops, bacon
factories, wholesale provision warehouses and public cold air stores,
all of which are regularly inspected by the Meat Inspector.
A systematic examination of all imported frozen carcases of
mutton and lamb was carried out for Caseous Lymphadenitis. Over
58,000 carcases of mutton were examined during the year by the
Meat Inspector and 2,252 carcases were found to be affected with
the disease including 130 whole carcases of mutton which were
condemned.
Thousands of tons of Continental and Scandinavian offals were
imported into the Borough under licence from the Ministry of Food.
In several cases condemnation of these took place, mostly due to
decomposition through lack of proper salting in the country of origin.
Large consignments of tinned hams and shoulders from the
continent arrived in the Borough and thousands of these tins were
condemned, principally owing to faulty sterilization of the tins in
the process of canning.
On April 1st, Mr. W. Tuvey, "Lynn Regis" Piggeries, Colliers
Row, Romford, Essex, took over the collection of the condemned
meat and other foods from the Smithfield Animal Products Co.,
Stanwell, Middlesex, who had given notice to terminate their contract
with the Council,
