The next table shows the birth-rates in the Borough and in
the registration sub-districts in 1928, and during the previous
decennium 1918-1927 :—

This is the lowest birth-rate recorded in Battersea with the
exception of the years 1918 and 1927. The birth-rate shows a
decline in three of the Wards of the Borough—Winstanley, Park
and Shaftesbury Wards. The birth-rate in Battersea is 3.0 per
1,000 lower than the average for the previous decennium 1918—
1927.
The birth-rate for the County of London was 15.9 per 1,000
of the population, and for England and Wales the rate was 16.7.
Illegitimate births numbered 123 or 4.48 per cent, of the total
births.
Under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1926, which
came into operation on the 1st July, 1927, the registration of stillbirths
was made compulsory. During 1928, 90 stillbirths were
registered as belonging to Battersea.
The total number of stillbirths notified during the year was 78.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered in the Borough during 1928
was 2,674. Of these 1,091 were deaths of non-residents and were
transferred to the districts in which the persons ordinarily resided.
There were on the other hand, 371 deaths of Battersea residents
