Births. The number of Live Births allocated to Chelsea was 787, and the birth rate was 15. 1. The total was made up by Males 423: Females 364. From an examination of the "Summary of Vital Statistics" on page 10 it would appear that the decline in the number of registered live births has been arrested, an assumption which is supported by the following table in respect of both England and Wales and Chelseas;-

Infant Mortality. Once again the number of deaths of infants under the age of one year has declined. During the year, fifteen deaths, representing a mortality rate of 19.1 occurred. The remarkable fact which emerges from a consideration of the following table is the great opportunity presented for infants to attain to adult life (In 1900, approximately 1 child in 7 failed to reach its first birthday: in 1953 the ratio was 1 to 52).

During the period 5th to 8th December, 1952, a very persistent and dense fog occurred. In the first instance it consisted mainly of smoke, but on the latter three days it developed into a very thick water fog which spread well outside the metropolitan area. Greatly increased mortality from certain causes resulted, as evidenced by the following table:—
