DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION
This work has continued throughout the year, bub owing to the fact
that poliomyelitis cases had increased somewhat, the London County Council
applied restrictions in regard to Immunisation during the summer months,
the period at which the incidence of poliomyelitis is at its greatest.
During the week ending 19th July, 1952, 4 paralytic and 2 non-paralytic cases
of poliomyelitis were notified, whilst in a comparable period in July 1953,
the figures were 17 and 10 respectively for the London area.
The following table gives information as to work carried out during the
year in respect to children resident in the Borough:-

The Registrar-General has estimated the population of Chelsea to be as
follows:-
Under one year of age 790
Between one and four years of age 2,720
Between five and fourteen years of age 4.600 8,110
The percentage of the child population between the years 0 to 15 benefitting
from Immunisation was approximately 51 as compared with 65 in 1952. The difficulties
experienced as outlined above have undoubtedly greatly contributed to the
falling-off in the numbers of children presenting themselves for this facility.
