Sanatorium Treatment.: During the year 203 patients were
sent to sanatoria, 118 under the County Scheme, 61 through the
Guardians, and 24 through other sources. In addition, 41 children
are attending the Open Air Schools. The average duration of
residence remains the same, and the same difficulties remain in
finding suitable employment for those discharged fit for work.
X-ray Examinations: During the year 40 patients were
examined, of whom 9 were children. There were 36 examinations
of the chest and 4 of other parts.
Sputum Examinations: Of 215 sputum specimens bacteriologically
examined at the Seamen's Hospital, 37 proved positive and
the remainder negative. At the same time, 238 specimens were
chemically examined at the Dispensary for Albumen, with very
similar results to those mentioned last year.
Tuberculosis Care Committee: The Interim Tuberculosis
Care Committee, which had accomplished such good work in the
past, came to an end on the 6th May when the Permanent Care
Committee was formed in accordance with the decision of the Council
as indicated last year. Miss Johnston, the Hon. Secretary of the
Interim Committee, kindly agreed to act in a similar capacity to the
new Committee.
This Committee meet every month (except August) at the
Borough Hall, but a Sub-Committee consisting of the Chairman,
the Medical Officer of Health, the Tuberculosis Officer and the
Secretary, meet almost weekly to deal with emergency cases.
Miss Johnston gives a short report below, but much of the
assistance given has been of such a nature as cannot well be written
down. The friendly visits, the kindly advice, and the interest
shown in their welfare, have been much appreciated by the patients
and also by the Dispensary staff:—
"During the year assistance to the extent of over £80 was
rendered to patients and their families by the
Charity Organisation Society,
Greenwich Soldiers and Sailors' Help Society,
Soldiers and Sailors' Families' Association,
United Services Fund,
Invalid Children's Aid Association,
British Red Cross Society,
Private Donors and other friends,
