From careful and frequent revision of the Registers it is estimated that the number of Tuberculous persons residing in the Borough at the close of 1924 amounted to 764, as follows:—

Men.Women.Children.Total.
Pulmonary Tuberculosis218214126558
Non-pulmonary1919168206

Patients who have kept in apparent good health for at least
a period of 5 years are now struck off the Register, but are visited
periodically and examined if necessary.

Dealing with the Dispensary itself, 919 new patients were examined during the year. The sources from which these patients came are as follows:—

Doctors230
Hospitals16
School Medical Service32
Ministry of Pensions14
Own Application111
Nurses (Contacts)516

Contacts: Much of the nurses' time is spent endeavouring
to secure the examination of every contact. This year, out of a
total of 711 Contacts, 581 or 81 per cent, were examined, of whom
49, or 8 per cent., were found to be Tuberculous. In addition,
103 Contacts were examined more than once before arriving at a
definite diagnosis.
The work of the Dispensary is shown in the statistical table
on pages 33 and 34 and explains itself.
Duration of Illness: Taking 90 deaths in 1924 from
Pulmonary Tuberculosis (54 men, 30 women, 6 children) whose
histories were recorded at the Dispensary the average duration of
illness for both sexes worked out at 37 months as against 38 months
last year, the difference between the males and the females being
3 months against 2.4 months in the preceding year. In the
children, the average duration was 6 months, against 6.2 in 1923.
Family History: In connection with the 90 deaths alluded
to in the previous paragraph, there was a history of Tuberculosis
amongst the near relatives (father, mother, brothers, sisters) in 19
instances, and amongst remote relatives (uncles, aunts, etc.) in 12.
