The 15 cases referred to above comprised: 4 Debility; 2
Syphilis; 2 Chronic Bronchitis. These 8 patients were notified as
suffering from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The 7 cases diagnosed as
suffering from Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis proved: 1 Malignant
Disease of the Hip; 1 Suppurative Disease of the Kidney; and
5 Simple Swelling of the Glands due to affections of the throat and
scalp.
Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis: The 52 (corrected) Notifications
included:—
9 cases of General or Miliary Tuberculosis
18 ,, Tuberculosis of the Glands (Neck)
3 „ „ „ Spine
8 „ „ „ Joints
4„ ,, ,, Abdomen
3 ,, ,, „ Bone
6 „ „ „ Brain (Meningitis)
1 „ „ „ Skin
In connection with this form of Tuberculosis, affecting chiefly,
children it is interesting to note that 38 of the 52 cases used condensed
milk almost exclusively. Many cases of Non-Pulmonary
Tuberculosis in children are regarded as due to infection by the
Bovine Bacillus as found in cow's milk.
With the exception of Tuberculosis of the Neck Glands and of
the Brain, the above patients were mostly notified from Hospitals,
and their treatment, which formerly was mainly surgical, is now
likely to be considerably influenced by the recent advances in
Heliotherapy or Sunlight Treatment, either natural or artificial.
Encouraging reports are being received of the wonderful results
obtained by this treatment, both on the Continent and at home, so
that it appears that surgical treatment, as far as operative measures
are concerned, will in future be greatly restricted, and that no
longer will we see those scars and deformities which are all too often
seen to-day on the bodies of our children.
In connection with the Light Treatment the Public Health
Committee arranged a popular lecture by Dr. Saleeby, which was
largely attended by both Council and Public, and it is hoped that
ere long Greenwich will follow the lead of some of the other Metropolitan
Boroughs, and instal the necessary apparatus.
Deaths from Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis, of which there
were 21 (equal to a rate of .20 per 1,000), included 8 cases of Meningitis,
4 of Abdominal Tuberculosis, 4 General Tuberculosis, and 5.
