Report on the health of the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea for the year 1926

Diphtheria.
The number of cases of Diphtheria notified in Battersea during
1926 was 540 as compared with 396 in 1925, 372 in 1924, 374 in
1923 and 670 in 1922.
The number of deaths registered from the disease was 20,
giving a death-rate of 0.116 as compared with 10 deaths and a
death-rate of 0.06 in 1925.
Of the 540 cases notified 533 or 98.7 per cent. were removed
to hospital. The infected houses numbered 472.
In 64 cases notified (not included in the above total) the diagnosis
of Diphtheria was not confirmed at hospital.
The case-rate per 1,000 population was 3.14 as compared
with 2.30 in 1925, 2.18 in 1924, 2.19 in 1923, and 3.96 in 1922.
The case-mortality was 3.70 as compared with 2.53 in 1925, 6.72
in 1924, and 9.09 in 1923.
The incidence of the disease was highest in the Nine Elms,
Latchmere and Church Wards. .
