The population of the New Town registration district includes the inhabitaits
of the Holborn Union Workhouse, 1,250 in number, on the night of the census, which
do not belong to this parish and are excluded for statistical purposes. The corrected
number of inhabitants for this district is therefore 28,325 and the corrected population
of the parish is 121,108.
As compared with the figures of the 1891 census, the population of the
Haggerston registration district shows a marked increase and that of Hoxton New
Town a slight increase, whilst Shoreditch South has a marked decrease in the number
of people as also to a lesser degree has Hoxton Old Town.
The enumerated populations at the 1896 census, in the several wards of the parish
were as follows:—

The figures of the 1891 census are given so that comparison can be made. A
marked decrease has taken place in the number of people living in Church and
Moorfields wards and to a lesser extent in Kingsland ward. The populations of the
other wards have more or less increased.
BIRTHS.
The number of births registered during the year was 4,364. The males were
40 in excess of the females, the numbers being respectively 2,202 and 2,162. In the
Holborn Union Workhouse there were 89 births, 45 males and 44 females, of which
32 were legitimate and 57 illegitimate. In the Shoreditch infirmary there were 73
births, 41 males and 32 females.
