BOROUGH OF SHOREDITCH.
The Vestry of the Parish of St. Leonard Shoreditch,
IN THE COUNTY OF LONDON.
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
Public Health Department,
January, 1897.
To the Vestry of the parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my report on the public health, sanitary condition,
and vital statistics of the parish, for the year ending December 31st, 1896. Endeavour
has been made as far as possible to follow on the same lines as adopted in previous
annual reports.
POPULATION.
Pursuant to section 3 of the London (Equalisation of Rates) Act, 1894, on the
night of March 29th, 1896, a census was taken of the population in each of the civil
parishes in the Administrative County of London, and the number of people in
Shoreditch was found to be 122,358, the population having decreased by 1,651 since
the previous census. When this decrease is taken into consideration with the fact
that during the five years ending December, 1895, the births exceeded the deaths by
nearly eight thousand, it would appear that over nine thousand persons have migrated
from the parish during this period.
The 1896 census population in each of the four registration districts, was as
follows:—
Shoreditch South 17,975
Hoxton New Town 29,575
Hoxton Old Town 27,645
Haggerston 47,163
